Tennis issues Twitter warning for online gambling concerns

There are many people who are concerned that the growing number of ways in which we can communicate with one another will lead to greater opportunity for those of a criminal nature to take advantage and to trap us into a scam. Now this might just seem like a bit of paranoia and naturally there are cases in which this is precisely the issue, but the saying goes that where there is smoke there is fire and at the very least one should pay attention to their concerns and see how these can be addressed.

Many of us are aware of the phenomenon of Twitter and the incredible way in which it has revolutionized the way people communicate with each other. Firstly you are able to follow people that you normally would have no contact with and you can get an insight into what they are thinking. Ashton Kutcher has done this to perfection with his profile and he was the first person on Twitter to get more than one million followers. This was in a tight race with Larry King and one of the main lessons learnt here is that you can build your personal brand. There is now a trend where celebs are signing up all over the place but it is only those that actually Tweet themselves that are gaining the true support of their fans.

The other advantage of Twitter is the fact that you are only allowed one hundred and forty characters to say what you want to and this means that there is no room for warbling on. People love the fact that the message is short and to the point and this has now been used as a tool by many advertisers. It is this sort of use of the online application that leads people to worry about what else it could possibly be used for.

There is a growing number of spammers on Twitter and this has already caught a number of people unawares. Now taking this to an extra level, the organizers of the US Open tennis competition have told players that they are not allowed to Tweet about any sensitive information, such as player conditions and information on matches, as this could violate laws relating to online gambling. There have been similar scares at Wimbledon this year and obviously this is a situation that they would like to not repeat.

It is clear then that Twitter and its use takes on a whole meaning and one has to be very careful what is shared online.
