Elburn Board Acts on Banning Video Gambling

Residents of Elburn are concerned over the effects that video gambling can have on the families of their small community. They are weighing the pros and cons of such an activity in their area. And for them, it seems that it is more detrimental than beneficial. Consequently, last Monday night, the village board in a meeting, asked the town’s attorney, by a 4-1 vote, to draw up an ordinance seeking to ban video gambling in their place.

Trustees William Grabarek, Romke, Kenneth Anderson and Jeffrey Walter all voted in favor of the ban, each for a different reason. Grabarek doesn’t think that gambling would do well for Elburn’s standing as a family-oriented and decent community. Trustee Anderson said he knows of a relative who is $30,000 or more in debt because of video gambling.

Trustee Jerry Schmidt voted against it because he says customers of bars and restaurants in Elburn might transfer to other towns that have not enacted the ban. “I don’t see anything about people being dragged in off the street. … I’m looking out for our community. We’ve got to go pro-growth here,” he says.

Trustee Gordon Dierschow abstained from the vote because for him it was still too early to decide since the state gaming board has not made its rules yet regarding the licensing and inspection of the machines. The board has sixty days to run through the guidelines and the towns have until mid September to choose not to join.

Some of the town’s prominent and concerned residents also aired their thoughts on the issue. Darlene Marcusson, founder and director of Lazarus House shelter in St. Charles, and also an addictions counselor, is recommending for its banning. Addressing the board, she says, “Of all the addictions, and that includes ones as horrible as heroin, gambling has the highest suicide rate of all the addictions.” “I personally don’t feel that it is a good fit with this small, family-oriented community. I think it promotes addictive behavior that is harmful to people,” this, from resident Mary Baumstark.

County board member Drew Frasz of La Fox told the board he does not want to see any inconsistency and variation such as if some towns and the county ban it and others don’t.

The fate of the ordinance will be known in September when the board will meet again to vote on it.
