National Football League continues its hypocrisy

The United States media has been alight with the issue of the National Football League recently and this is unfortunately not due to the fact that many of the teams are now going into their pre-season training camps and that we can look forward to a great season come Fall. The issue that has come to the fore is on the subject of online gambling and the fact that the League seems to be dead set on ensuring that it leaves supporters dazed and confused by its seemingly constantly changing position on the subject.

What is in actual fact quite funny about the whole thing is that the League has not changed its position on the issue at all, but its actions have left people wondering as to the logic behind some of its thinking. Firstly the League was instrumental in ensuring that the existing online gambling legislation in the United States was passed. The manner in which this law was passed remains controversial to this day, with many questioning the fact that it seemed to work its way through the normally very slow law making process so quickly. It seemed that no sooner was the UIGEA bill introduced, than it was signed into law. In addition to this, the League has made sure that it has voiced its opinion about sports betting very loudly, saying that the move by the state of Delaware to allow this activity is simply not acceptable.

So with all of these in mind, there is no question that people were going to be surprised when the League announced the launch of betting scratch cards. Surely this is another form of betting and goes against everything that they have had to say about the past time of gambling up to now? Well the obvious answer to this question would seem to be a resounding yes, but the League is of a different opinion altogether.

According to the NFL, the pairing of football teams with state lotteries is not something that can be viewed as gambling in the same sense as online gambling and sports betting. This comes on the back of the news that the Dallas Cowboys are to feature on an online lottery scratch card. The whole situation is very confusing indeed and if the NFL were to take a step off the moral platform, they would probably find that they have firmer ground to stand on. What has to happen to calm them down is to ensure that there is good regulation but they seem unwilling to work towards this goal.
