European Union moves to harmonize online gambling legislation

The European Union was formed with the intention of joining together all of the countries that are situated in the European region. There are more than twenty members and those that are not part of this elite club are constantly clamoring to be counted amongst its members. But this does not come easy and the European Union has a number of requirements that countries have to meet before they can be considered as membership material. The most important requirement is that all states must allow the free movement of people, goods and services between their borders, that is why the European Union passport allows one access to all of the member countries. In order to facilitate this requirement, it is necessary that all members of the European Union try to harmonize their laws and polices as much as possible. This is no easy task and this is one of the biggest challenges that existing and potential members face in their dealings with the European Union.

The area of online gambling has now come under the spotlight and surprisingly perhaps, is the fact that the long time members of the European Union are the most guilty when it comes to laws that do not allow for the free trade and provision of online gambling services. Online gambling companies have come up against some big challenges when trying to operate in various markets such as Denmark, Finland and even France, amongst others. France has now taken concrete steps towards regulating the online gambling industry, but when these were presented to the European Union, it was clear that there was still much work to do when it comes to the ultimate goal of regulatory harmonization.

The European Union is eager to ensure that there is a localized gambling policy in place and does not want to have to deal with the same issues that the United States government now faces as a result of the UIGEA legislation. It is clear that this course of action was not the right way forward and now online gambling legislation in Europe is to be altered and in some cases even drafted for the first time. There is a long road ahead though as different countries are at varying levels of development when it comes to the regulation of the online gambling industry. The European Union will be forced to work in close cooperation with all member states and while showing respect for their national policies, will have to make sure that these do not go against the principles of the European Union. It is likely to be an interesting few months ahead.
