Online gambling industry expected to boom in Russia

On the first of July this year, the Russian people were forced to come to terms with the fact that they would no longer be able to enjoy the past time of gambling at their familiar neighbourhood gambling parlour. This was the day on which new legislation enacted by the country’s government just two months ago was brought into effect and at the same time it was clear that life was going to be far more difficult for the more than three hundred thousand who were left without a job as a result of the legislation. Now people will have to go to special export zones which is the only place in which the Russian government is willing to allow people to enjoy the act of gambling. The ban on gambling also included the online format, but there is some light at the end of tunnel as many people believe that there is no way that the government will be able to effectively monitor online gambling activities.

So there is definitely some hope for this industry. The main issue of concern is the fact that the government is not going to be able to actually control how people gain access to web sites and download services. It is thought that the government is not likely to follow the same path as the Chinese government would like to, which would effectively see the social control of the population. This is not a measure that they are expected to follow, but then again there is definitely some legacy of social control and autocracy in the country of Russia and some fear that this could indeed be the way that the government would go if pushed.

Online gambling companies are therefore expected to continue to offer their services to the market, with little regard for the government and its decrees. They are operating on the premise of make hay while the sun shines. Some critics of the decision have questioned the Russian government’s thinking, stating that it should have seen that the same kind of measure did not work in the United States and that this is likely to be the same for Russia.

It remains to be seen what is going to happen to the traditional gambling industry in the country, many think that it is likely that illegal activities will flourish. The government has taken a hard line on the industry and it is expected that the punishment for these activities will be harsh.
