Online gambling is not the most harmful thing to children – Oxford professor

One of the biggest concerns that people have against the online gambling industry is the fact that this form of the past time can in theory be accessed by anyone. Critics of the industry are concerned that the ability to take part in online gambling whenever and wherever one wants to means that there are going to be far more instances of gambling addictions, financial problems as a result of this activity and then also that underage gambling will be a far greater problem. This is all due to the convenience aspect of the past time which is in theory always accessible.

One can understand these concerns and they should not be treated flippantly as they are indeed real, but the issue that does have to be taken into account is how these can be addressed. One of the best ways to address these issues is by ensuring that there is a very good regulatory frame work in place that provides guidelines for both online gambling players and those companies that provide these services to them. Not all countries have these regulations in place and the United Kingdom has probably got the world’s best policy when it comes to the online gambling industry. But for all of the good policies it is more to do with the way that they are enforced that actually is the way in which one will ensure that for instance children do not gain access to online gambling web sites.

People against the online gambling industry are concerned that this required level of enforcement is not in place and that children do not really have boundaries when it comes to the internet. This is true to an extent as it depends on the type of software installed in each individual machine that will actually stop a child from gaining access to certain web sites. Often smaller children in particular gain access to sites and services purely by accident.

But what happens when they do gain access to online gambling web sites, and what dangers do these hold for them is the question that is always being raised by those against the industry. But an Oxford professor – Susan Greenfield, says that that this is not the main danger at all. She has stated that the problem with compulsive gambling that children often demonstrate is not necessarily due to online gambling but is more likely to be as a result of too much time on the computer. So children should be outside playing more and developing their physical abilities instead of being online. It is a similar fact to the issue that too much television is bad for children. Everything in moderation.
