Belgium online gambling companies have their day in court

The country of Belgium is often thought to be relatively peaceful and this is certainly true when compared to some countries in places such as Africa, Asia and Latin America where coup d’etats are the modus operandi of choice. But all is not just moon shine and roses in the country of a thousand beers. There is a long history of quiet discord between the French speaking element of the population and the Flemish speaking element. This is a feud that goes back literally hundreds of years and one is likely to find that if a person who lives in the country is questioned about what the feud started about, they probably will not be able to give one an answer straight away. Needless to say there are often government changes in the country as one part of the population will disagree with the policies of a particular government and votes of no confidence are a regular occurrence. It is all quite civilized, but time consuming and defeatist.

This is not the only dispute that has held the country’s attention recently. As with many other European countries, football is a national passion. The game has had various spin offs such as a vibrant merchandising industry and even more so in terms of the gambling side of things. There are many people who thoroughly enjoy placing bets on their favourite teams every week. Given the amount of football that European teams play these days, there is definitely bound to be huge potential in this industry which is worth millions. That is why market players thought it worth the trouble of going to court.

Sport bookmakers were up against the football clubs in this instance due to concerns over trademarks and the use of their club names. This week the court of appeal finally ruled in favour of the sports bookmaker companies saying that they were well within their rights to use the names of these companies when they accept bets from punters. The clubs were very much opposed to this as they believed that these companies were profiting from using their names. The main reason for the online gambling companies victory was the fact that the court viewed online gambling as a separate business altogether and therefore not an activity that the football clubs could lay claim to or try to control.
