Online gambling is better for your health

One of the main reasons that online gambling was banned in the United States was due to the concerns that the government had about its impact on people’s lives. This was the case when the UIGEA legislation was passed by the Bush administration in 2006. Law makers were convinced that online gambling would mean that there would be a higher rate of gambling addictions, that underage gambling levels would sky rocket and that there would also many cases of financial ruin and online gambling scams.

It is not fair to discount these concerns as they are indeed real and do have to be taken into account. What should be said from the outset though is that there are ways and means of regulating the online gambling industry in such a way that these concerns can be addressed to a large extent. But this was not something that the law makers responsible for the existing online gambling legislation in the United States were willing to try. This is the main argument that leading Democrat Barney Frank had when he announced the introduction of his bill to the House of Congress. The bill seeks to repeal the current online gambling legislation.

There are various reasons that people have come up with that show why it is a good idea to support the online gambling bills. The financial crisis and the difficulties it has brought about for the United States and especially in terms of the state budgets has been a key reason cited as a motivation for the online gambling bill. In addition to this is the fact that Barney Frank has not only introduced a bill that would repeal existing legislation. He has also introduced a bill that proposes a regulatory framework for the online gambling industry. So he has done some of the ground work already.

But there is another compelling reason that he might want to consider adding to his arsenal and that is that online gambling is better for your health than traditional gambling. This is mainly due to the issue of second hand smoke that has turned out to be a significant problem at land based casinos. Online gambling means that you don’t have to be in the presence of smokers if you are not a smoker. There are more and more people who like the idea of having the choice to decide whether or not they would like to expose themselves to smokers. There are also not many land based casinos that actually ban smoking.

Given how the world’s attitude to smoking seems to be changing, it is clear that the health angle should be one that Barney Frank uses soon.
